By prioritizing, setting goals, and building a flexible plan within your schedule, you can stay more focused and learn to live and work smarter, not harder.

When any mom starts blogging, it’s hard to imagine how much work it will take to maintain a blog. Blogging is NOT a get rich quick scheme. It takes time and dedication to grow your following and rank in SEO. But here are some ways to be more efficient with your time:

Create Priorities And Goals

Priorities and goals aren’t just for blogging. Sit down and write down what is important to you in work, life, and having kids. Do you want to maintain your friendships? Be more present with your children? Connect with your partner? Live a healthy lifestyle?

Once you have that list, turn that into goals to achieve every week. Make sure they are achievable. While failure is a necessary process to help you learn what actually works for you, the best thing to do is set yourself up for success.

Time Boxing

If you have never heard to time boxing, this is a way to control the amount of time you spend on each task. This doesn’t have to be just blogging tasks!

With the invent of the smartphone, almost every person out there has access to a stopwatch (or countdown timer). Use this to keep track of your time and stay focused on the task at hand.

Batching Your Work

There are a lot of ways you can group together the tasks you take on every day so that you aren’t wasting time and energy multitasking all day long.

While, as moms, multitasking is in the job description, you will be amazed how much time you can save by doing all of your analytical (reports, planning/scheduling, budgeting, etc), creative (designing pins, creating crafts for the kids, etc), physical (cleaning, moving items, playing with your children, etc), and social (this is the hardest to batch but does require a whole different part of your brain than the others) to dos in (about) the same time frame!

Repurposing Blog Content

Once you have created a piece of content on your blog (whether that be a blog post, video, or image) think of all the ways you can use that content. Here are some ideas on spreading that work around to “work smarter”:

  • Use blog post copy in an email blast (or social media update)
  • Use an image in a social update
  • Create an email series around posts you have already written
  • Do a roundup post where you highlight your own content that relates to each other
  • Share a video in different blog posts (or on social media)

There are a ton of ways you can do work once and just re-use it over and over and over again!

The only word of caution is to make sure you are still updating old posts (as needed) and creating new content as much as possible. The key is to get the most out of your work rather than stop working altogether (at least until you have sufficient content to repurpose like crazy, lol).

Create A Schedule

Kids are choatic and the unexpected happens all the time. So how do you build a schedule?

In some ways, you don’t! At least you don’t create a set-in-stone schedule (unless the tasks are ACTUAL schedule items like school hours or bedtime). What you want to do is build a plan for your days that has flexibility built in.

Use time boxing to estimate the amount of time a task will take and list your priorities for the day and when you believe you will be able to work on each item. This can be laundry (which you can do all in one day to “batch” (no pun intended) your tasks), creating a blog post, making new pins for old blog posts, dedicated play time with your kids, and anything else that is on your to do list.
